I was offered a complimentary ride along The HandleBar. All opinions are my own.

When I was at Punch Bowl Social earlier in August, I glanced just out the window and saw this fun looking contraption peddle past.

As it turns out, The HandleBar launches right across the street.

The HandleBar is Detroit’s first and only 16-person pedal powered pub on wheels! Grab 15 of your friends and let our company designated driver navigate as you pedal your way around downtown Detroit, stopping at areas of interest (bars, restaurants, etc) along the way. Bring your own food and drink, crank up the music and enjoy a great time with friends!  We do birthdays, bachelorette/bachelor parties, corporate outings and we’re happy to be any excuse you have to get together and have fun!

A few tips that I learned early in the journey:

  • Wear some sensible shoes (not flip flops) Dress for the weather, especially as the unpredictable fall times are coming upon us. The HandleBar is pretty sheltered on top so we would have been OK if it had rained as it had been threatening that day. But you’ll want to wear warm clothes for sure or plan on rain for getting off The HandleBar. HandleBar drives rain or shine!

  • Don’t worry about your cooler or purse or extra clothes. There is plenty of overhead bin space.
  • Create your phone playlist to hook up to the on-board speakers!
  • Bring DISPOSABLE sippy cups with lids. Bring snacks & drinks. Much easier to keep clean & you don’t have to worry about getting your dirty cup back home.

Two brothers Stephen and Brian were inspired to create The HandleBar after learning of these fun carts in The Netherlands. It is a perfect combination to blend the outdoors & socializing while helping Detroit in the meantime!

Our driver Jason from Slow Roll Detroit settled us all in and navigated our whole drive through Campus Martius and Cadillac Square (at Checker Bar or Greenwich Times), over to Comerica Park for a photo shoot, and down near Hockey Town.

Look close and you’ll see Dutch wording “Het Fietscafe” on the bike, which is a word that the Dutch brother inventors Henk and Zwier made up of existing words (Het = the, Fiets = bicycle, cafe = bar)

My favorite area of downtown…..many memories and fun times. It was wonderful to enjoy the summer night. We chose to stay our Cadillac Square stop at Checker Bar and it was a fun time for me because I had never been there. I spent quite some time at Greenwich Times (next door) before.

Logistically, the couponer in me wants to encourage you to schedule during the week to spice up usual happy hours and be frugal! Parking in the Z Garage is easy and safe and nearby. HandleBar recommends at least 6 peddlers but I would say you really want as many as possible up to 10 (the bar does not move without peddlers!) so you will want the strength and you will want TALL peddlers (5′ 5″ or taller. There are only a FEW short-adjustable seats & some of us had a hard time). The FAQ site gives a lot of ideas for your trip.
